One of Blaugrana’s favorites to become president believes Messi will be persuaded to stay at Camp Nou.
Lionel Messi “wants to end his sporting career at Barcelona”, says Victor Font, with the presidential candidate who has promised the return of the Catalan Xavi to the team, who will help the Argentine not to leave the club.
The battle for power in the well-known La Liga club continues to be fierce, with elections expected to be held on January 24th.
Font hopes to surprise with votes by defeating Joan Laporta, who could lead the team for the second time.
Whoever wins will face a series of problems after taking office, with the next club captain Messi who may no longer be part of Barca.
The six-time Golden Ball winner still has to sign a new contract, and he has even made an insistence to leave the club in 2020, which in the middle of this year will be the player without a contract.
Messi has said he will not comment on his future until the end of the season, with the South American reportedly unhappy under Ronald Koeman.
Font believes another change would give the 33-year-old plenty of reason to stay, with his plan to bring club legend Xavi to his club and remove him from the Qatari squad, Al Sadd.
“Messi has explained this, he wants to stay here and end his sporting career at Barca.” Font told Mundo Deportivo.
“Before the summer, when he was very disappointed, he always said that it is very important for him to have a winning and competitive project for the team.”
“We have this winning and competitive project, with people like Xavi. “This relationship between Xavi and Messi exists, I believe that this will be one of the main reasons and guarantees that Messi will be very comfortable with our project and we will continue with him as we have many options for this.”
Having regular contact with Xavi, Font has been asked if the World Cup winner has discussed these plans with Messi.
“I do not know what they talked about, but I know that they are in contact because they have a good relationship , but I do not know in detail what they talked about.”
Messi is free to talk to other teams outside Spain as early as this month, but he still continues to have a chance to play for Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain while awaiting other offers during these six months.
