Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has claimed responsibility for his team’s shocking and embarrassing loss to Alcoyano in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday.

Although Eder Militao gave the Spanish champions the lead before the end of the first half in the duel of the 1/16 finals, the third division team Alcoyano equalized the score in the 80th minute through Jose Solbes and the match went into extra time.

Things got worse for Alcoyanon when Ramon Lopez was sent off in the second half of extra time, but Juanan came on the scene and scored the winning goal to eliminate Real Madrid giants.

The elimination from the King’s Cup comes just a week after Real Madrid lost to Athletic Club in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup and after a goalless draw with Osasua in La Liga.

Wednesday’s failure will further increase the pressure on Zidane, who defended his players, although he is not sure if he still has their support.

“I think so, but you have to ask them (if they still support me),” Zidane said after the match.

“We have done good things, but not so recently. Except in the last games, we have done good things this season.”

“I take responsibility and whatever needs to happen will happen. I am very calm, the players wanted to win this match. They try and sometimes things go differently.”
