Wayne Rooney officially retired from active football today and immediately took on a leadership role.

Derby County Football Club has announced the appointment of Wayne Rooney as the club’s new coach.

The 35-year-old takes this position in a two-and-a-half year deal, which will last until the summer of 2023.

The England and Manchester United top scorer, with over 700 professional appearances in his name, joined Derby in January 2020 and made 35 appearances for them.

Rooney’s first game as the new Derby manager will be Saturday’s home game against Rotherham United.
