Manchester City have decided to cut the salary of the best player at the club in the last few years, Kevin de Bruyne, just to pave the way for the approach of Lionel Messi from Barcelona.
De Bruyne is said to be furious with Manchester City executives, who have offered him less money in the new contract than in the current one.
Although he agreed to extend his stay at the Etihad for another five years, the Belgian midfielder has not welcomed the fact that in the new deal he will earn less money than he has earned so far.
According to The Athletic, the reason for his salary reduction is because the club hopes to finance Lionel Messi’s transfer at the club.
City plans to cut players’ salaries little by little in order to make Messi an offer to join Pep Guardiola at the Etihad.
Messi is now free to talk to other clubs about any eventual deal, having entered the last six months of his contract with Barcelona.
Meanwhile, City’s talks with De Bruyne have been suspended for now, but it is said that the Belgian will sign the contract with a salary reduction.
